  • I’m Finally Going to Pepper Fest!

    I have wanted to go to this event for years, but something has always come up that’s kept me from snagging tickets ($30 here)… until this year, y’all! Can you imagine how excited I was when my girl Cherith from Clairemont Communications gave me a buzz to ask to me to volunteer as a beer judge? Well dang, Cher… twist my arm, why don’t ya? (PS: Thanks for the invite, giiiiiirl!)

    Billed as, “(The Amazing Pepper Festival is) a celebration of sustainable agriculture, farmers, renewable energy, and the creativity of the Piedmont’s chefs, brewers and artisans. An afternoon of fun, food, children’s educational workshops, breweries, distilleries, music and entertainment!”, I’m pumped to make the 20 minute trek over to Chapel Hill for my first taste of the fest. Be sure to tune in on Instagram and see just how much heat this girl can sample in one afternoon.

    So here’s what you need to know – especially if you might be able to find yourself in Chapel Hill on the afternoon of Sunday, September 27th!

    Tickets get you:

    • The most delicious pepper-themed dishes from some of the Piedmont’s best chefs and food artisans using locally grown and produced food.* (Alcoholic drinks not included – bring some extra $$.)
    • Live music – The Stacks are playing! Tania Elizabeth (of the Avett Brothers) and Andy Stack.
    • Participation in fun activities for kids and adults about local farms, renewable energy, and the abundance of great local food in and around the Triangle!
    In addition to spending the afternoon enjoying flavorful, and occassionally spicy, dishes and drinks, you can feel pretty darn good knowing that all proceeds benefit Abundance NC, 
    Who is Abundance, you might ask? They’re “About Us” page reads: “At Abundance, we aim to be a hub of community resilience in central North Carolina, sourcing out the abundant local opportunities for us all to live and act sustainably, and bringing people together to exchange ideas and build the communities we want to live in.” Quite simply put, the group believes: “We don’t have to rely on goods and services brought in from elsewhere to eat well or to live fulfilling lives. We have everything we need to create a flourishing and interdependent community, right here at home.”
    Local and sustainable. I am definitely down with that. Add peppers and afternoon cocktails? I’m in.

  • Breakfast with Santa for FIVE Great Causes!

    Dr. Tinney Railey sent me an email this week asking me to help spread the word about this Saturday’s fundraiser and how could I not with so many great organizations benefiting?

    The Third Annual Charity Breakfast Buffet with Santa
    Saturday – December 11, 2010, 8-11am
    at Spice Street Restaurant in Chapel Hill

    This event is organized by the resident physicians at UNC and this year we are supporting 5 charities: Ronald McDonald House, SECU Family House, NC Children’s Hospital, NC Food Bank, and Toys for Tots. Last year we had a great event with over $1,000, 400 canned goods, and almost 500 toys donated. This year same great venue and price but we added an additional organization. We are also bringing awareness to Kayla’s Closet, an organization that provides formal dresses to ladies who could not otherwise afford them.

    Kids can take pictures with Santa (skip the mall lines and prices), make ornaments, and enjoy face painting all while benefiting the community. Spice Street will make a monetary donation to be divided between the Ronald McDonald House, SECU Family House, and NC Children’s Promise for every buffet purchased. We are asking people to bring canned goods or new toys. Adults $10 and kids $5 including tax and gratuity (cash, check and credit cards accepted)!

    I received a really special email today and can’t pass up the opportunity to share this event with readers.

    Last year we had a great event with over $700, 300 canned goods, and almost 400 toys donated. This year we have a bigger venue, a cheaper price, and an additional charity. Kids can take pictures with Santa (skip the mall lines and prices), make ornaments, and enjoy face painting all while benefiting the community.

    Spice Street will make a donation (to the Ronald McDonald House and SECU Family House) for every buffet purchased and we are asking people to bring canned goods or new toys.

    Adults $10 and kids $5 including tax and gratuity (cash, check and credit cards accepted)!

    PS – I was really excited to find out, when checking out the website, that Spice Street is owned by Giorgios Hospitality Group – family company of a good friend of mine! Many thanks to them for serving as host venue for this event. I’m really looking forward to their new Cary venture – Giorgio – coming this month.

  • So Appropriate

    UNC is playing right now, actually.

    Received this funny little story via email today… and it’s SO appropriate.

    Two boys in Raleigh were playing basketball when one of them was attacked by a rabid Rottweiler. Thinking quickly, the other boy ripped a board off a nearby fence, wedged it into the dog’s collar and twisted it, breaking the dog’s neck.

    A newspaper reporter from the News & Observer witnessed the incident and rushed over to interview the boy. The reporter began entering data into his laptop, beginning with the headline: “Brave Young Tar Heels Fan Saves Friend From Jaws Of Vicious Animal.”

    “But I’m not a Heels fan,” the little hero interjected..

    “Sorry,” replied the reporter. “But since we’re in North Carolina, I just assumed you were.” Hitting the delete key, the reporter begins again, “NC State Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Dog Attack.”

    “But I’m not a State fan either,” the boy responds.

    The reporter says, “I assumed everybody in this state was either for the Heels or the Wolfpack. What team do you root for?”

    “I’m a Duke fan,” the boy says, grinning widely.

    Hitting the delete key, the reporter begins again, “Arrogant Little Yankee Bastard Kills Beloved Family Pet.”

    Bwahaha. Hope you all enjoyed. Sorry Beaufort Belle… I’ll try and pass along some Duke funnies for your house divided, too.

  • If You Need a Reason to Visit Chapel Hill

    Because yes, some of us in Rah-town definitely require a good reason to do so.

    UNC’s Pi Phi 5K

    When    : Saturday Nov. 15th from 10am-11am
    Registration is at 8am and the race starts at 10am.

    Where    : UNC Chapel hill

    What    : The Eve Carson Memorial 5k for Education is a race through the UNC campus in memory of former student body president Eve Carson. Proceeds from this event will benefit the following educational causes: The Eve Marie Carson Memorial Junior-Year Merit Scholarship, First Book, Clyde Erwin Elementary School in Onslow County.

    Registration is $15 and includes a shirt.

  • Chi Phi Thai

    This funny little segment from this weekend’s Good Morning America really makes me miss my sorority days – and want a Red Bull really bad, too.

    Note: This took place at UNC, but all local letter-wearers can still support the awesome Greek system in the Triangle and our brothers and sisters in Carolina Blue. Well, that is… until November 22nd… then it’s ON!
