  • Great Giveaway for You Southern Chefs

    I received some delicious responses to yesterday’s post about Natty Light Chicken and cooking with beer.

    In honor of that, I’m posting a fantastic giveaway that everyone would be crazy not to enter themselves into!

    My favorite local gift and decorative accessories boutique, Swagger Gifts, has been hosting a Facebook Friday of the Week (see former giveaway items here) for a few months now where each Friday something special in the store will be given away to one (sometimes even two) lucky commenters who are fans of Swagger Gifts’ page on facebook. The winner is randomly selected and then posted to Swagger’s blog (which also, is SO worth following).

    This week’s giveaway is a monogrammed “Big Wood Board” cutting board. They are PHENOMENAL.

    All you have to do to be entered to win is leave a comment directly on the photo on facebook. It’s THAT simple.

    While you’re on Swagger’s page, you should obviously click on “Become a Fan” so that you get an update every week when Swagger offers up a new great giveaway.

  • Chef Todd Reaches 100th Episode – Contributes to Great Cause

    100th Episode of “Cooking Coarse” Party to benefit Food Bank of NC

    Good Afternoon Ladies and Happy New Year!

    I wanted to let everyone know about a special event we are having this Thursday, January 8th at Savor Hospitality at 6:00 PM.

    This week, we will release the 100th episode of “Cooking Coarse”, the daily online video blog created by my husband, Chef Todd to provide free cooking instruction online.

    This is a milestone for the project and we are inviting friends, clients and fans to celebrate with us at a cocktail reception and live taping of the 100th episode (which will be released the next
    day).

    A$10 donation is requested, which includes beer/wine and light hors d’oeuvres. All collected money will be donated to The Food Bank of NC. Our goal is to raise $1000 at this event so we need your help!

    This is sure to be a fun, social event and I hope to see you all on Thursday!

    Remember my surprise (and enjoyment) at how NC event boasts a Hot Sauce Festival?

    Triangle Brewing Company has a cool video on their blog with pictures from the event… take a look!

    Looks like it was a beautiful day in Oxford for it – would’ve been nice to check it out in person!

  • Local Round-Up

    A collection of some good to know local info from yesterday’s blogosphere…

    From the retail business news goddess, Sue Stock:
    North Carolina’s Fresh Market stores have started stocking fresh shrimp that have been caught in NC waters.

    Add this to the ridiculously long list of things to do this Saturday:
    the Town of Cary’s Lazy Daze festival!

    Another from Sue Stock – the business news writer who keeps us on our retail toes:
    Replacements will be selling more than 100,000 pieces of overstocked merchandise. Unlike previous years, shoppers will pay a $5 entrance fee and then $5 for a box that they can then fill with as much yard sale merchandise as it will hold. (Yes, you can buy multiple boxes.) Items in the separate sidewalk sale section of the event will still be priced per item.

    Love it all.

  • Hot Sauce Festival?!

    No, not the Buckhead band (who still manage to amaze me with their on-stage shenanigans on Friday and Saturday evenings), but the real hot sauce!

    From today’s Boss’ Planner, Jonny mentions September 13th as the date for the NC Hot Sauce Festival… further proof that we’ll have a festival for anything! But hey, I’m not complaining.

    While I probably won’t be at that event (darn you, acid reflux), I still think it’s a fun idea.

    Clarification: apparently it’s the “hot sauce contest” as Google search results would have it.

    As many of you already know, we launched a daily vlog this week, “Cooking Coarse” designed to provide mini cooking lessons (of course focusing on basic cooking METHODS), but with some twists here and there.

    Anyways, today’s reminder of our regional differences: summer beverages.

    Apparently, north of our nation’s capital, they drink unsweetened crap tea and black coffee year round. Well not down here, thank goodness. There are a few things that every Southern needs in the summer:

    * BBQ (the food, not the action, I’ll have to share the language barrier we had based on that word some point in the future)
    * Watermelons, peaches, and strawberries
    * Some time at the beach/lake/sprinkler/your local body of water
    * Potato salad
    * Porches
    * And of course, lemonade (Country Time, Chick-Fil-A, or freshly-squeezed. Pink or Regular. I’m not picky.)

    Here’s some recipes from RealSimple.com for some summer lemonade for my fellow Southerns who will really appreciate it (aka Lil Lisa.)

    And if you love lemonade and you happen to live in Raleigh then I’m going to tell you a secret. The city’s best lemonade (and maybe the best BBQ) is at Cooper’s Barbecue. It’s downtown on Davie Street (across from Progress Energy) and you can get a BBQ sandwich, Lemonade, hushpuppies, and a side for $5. They only take cash but it’s TOTALLY worth the trip to the ATM. That’s my local endorsement of the day. 😛

    P.S.: If you want your summer beverage done up grown-up style then remember, citrus vodka can always go in lemonade, no matter what flavor it is. :-)”

  • Soon-to-Be Tailgating Favorites!

    Mandy from Swagger is at market this week… and the good stuff is already coming back to town via her market update blog posts!

    I have a feeling these southern collegiate essentials she blogged about yesterday are going to be totally necessary come football season:

    Market Watch July 08 – Day 3
    Today we found some really great collegiate gifts! One of my favorites was this grill cover! I would have been in the photo but I the sample was a UGA grill cover and I went to Georgia Tech so there was NOOOO way that was going to happen! I forced my mom to be in it but I think she dislikes them as much as I do!:)

    One of my other favorite gifts was a really cool coozie that was magnetic so you could stick it to the side of your car when you are tailgating – now that is a great idea! The salesman said you can even stick it to the side of your lawn mower – now you might be a redneck if…..:) I will let you guys know when we actually get this stuff in the store!

    I am really excited about the koozies that you can have your car hold for you… you know, for when you don’t have a free hand thanks to the plate of bbq in one, and your fork in the other! It’s freakin’ genius I tell ya.

    I double love the redneck inspiration to have your lawnmower hold your beer while you cut the grass. (Chad from A-1 Lawn will be getting one for Christmas this year no doubt!)
