  • I’ve Got Beach Fever

I have not been to the beach yet this summer (unless you count the whirlwind weekend at the end of April for Brianne’s wedding – be we barely saw the beach… there was other fun to be had!).

Here’s hoping that every weekend in August I’ll be at the coast. I can’t believe these pictures were taken in August of 2007! I stumbled upon them on my computer tonight and it stirred up this wicked beach fever I’ve been suffering from for months now…

Other than the NC coast, Nick and I will be heading to Clearwater, Florida over Labor Day Weekend for Jen and Trey’s wedding (congrats, y’all!). Anyone got any suggestions for places in the St. Pete/Clearwater area of Florida that we should check out during the long weekend?

  • Royal Wedding?

Move over, William and Kate – this weekend is all about Drew and Brianne!

Another love of my life is marrying the love of her life this weekend and I’m so excited to be making my way to Ocean Isle Beach in just a few short hours (after a Friday morning full of work) for a weekend full of rehearsals, dinner, doing my girlfriend duty once more of lookin’ good in a bridesmaid dress, a ceremony, and a rockin’ coastal reception!

Congrats, Bri and Drew!!! I loooooove you two! :-*

(Yes, B*Money is one of the few people in this world that I’d miss the TBMF for – and yes, I do expect texts, calls, and pictures from those of you dancing on a cooler in a field in Garner on Saturday!)

  • The Hushpuppies are a Big Deal

I almost laughed out loud when I read this line from George Cox’s review of Garner’s (somewhat new) Shuck ‘Em Shack:

Hushpuppies are not bad for a commercial product, though the Southerner in me cringes at paying $1.99 for a dozen.

I can remember going to Dockside at some point in college, one of the best locations in Wilmington for a great coastal view – paired with a bite to eat and a tasty drink. only to find out at that point they had decided to not offer hushpuppies at all. (Something about space for the fryer or it being the off-season… clearly I was in no mind for any excuses.) Everyone at our table heavily considered just leaving before ordering anything. What’s a Po’ Boy sandwich with a no hushpuppies? (The answer: not much.)

Same situation with the ill-fated Sunny Side Too, which also called Garner home. (I can name more than a handful of reasons this local restaurant didn’t last, sadly. But I won’t.)

My point is this: in Carolina, and much of the South, hushpuppies are expected. And we more often than not expect them to be yummy and a complimentary part of the Southern seafood meal.

  • Currrolina Saturday Night

The words are actually “Carolina Saturday night”, but Sunny Ledfurd sings it with a drawl. Sunny has been a fixture in the NC bar rocker scene for quite sometime (especially in Charlotte, but also in Raleigh at City Limits Saloon) and I am SO glad to hear him on XM Radio’s “Nashville” station now!

Check out the new video for “Pontoon Boat”. I would like to dedicate this to my pontoon friends…

(Above: That was the boys’ “cursed” boat via Summer 2008. They called it “cursed”, I called them “rookies”. I still love them all, though!)

(Above: The entire “Buckhead Saloon and Friends” crew celebrating Kite’s birthday out at Falls Lake… circa Summer 2008.)

My sister and I are heading to the beach this afternoon for a mini-vacay… see you suckers next week!

And PS – While pontoon boats are a NC lake fixture, I’d be lying if I said that I have not asked Nick if we can take a pontoon boat out in the ocean. 😉

  • 13 Coastal Projects Will Get State Funding

Personally, I’m very glad to see that some effort is being made to ensure that our NC beaches remain accessible to ALL.

13 Coastal Projects Will Get State Funding

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — State officials have approved funding for 13 projects to improve public access to the water along North Carolina’s rapidly developing coast.

Marine Fisheries Division Director Louis Daniel has approved about $20 million for sites that can be used by commercial and recreational fishermen, recreational boaters and the marine industry.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports $1.5 million has been approved for a $17 million fishing pier at Nags Head. An $18 million pier proposed for Emerald Isle will get $2.2 million.

The Legislature approved one-time funding for the projects based on recommendations from a Waterfront Access Study Committee. That panel said rapid development has brought higher property values and taxes that have resulted in the loss of traditional maritime industries and public access.
