  • Mondays

I typically despise Mondays. Since I can’t stand having a crappy outlook on anything, I’m changing the way I start my week.

I picked up Every Monday Matters a while back and decided yesterday that I’m going to start making Mondays matter… TODAY!

I’m on Week 1 – Making a list of what matters most to me!

Also in Week 1, I’ve made a list of things things that waste time in my life and making a plan to reduce those things so I have more time for the important stuff.

I’ve added this little tidbit to the sidebar of this blog so that anyone reading out there who cares can keep up with my new Mondays. I’ll probably group a few Mondays together here in there so that way it doesn’t take me a whole year to finish this project. If you want to borrow this book after me, just let me know!

(Just so you know, I’m definitely not a “self-help book” kind of girl… which is good… because this is not one of those books. Each week the goal is really simple and complemented by facts about why one should take on this goal and then resources for doing so. I can get behind that!)

  • What Book Got YOU Hooked?

For me, it wasn’t just one book – it was so many books that I was a fan of growing up (southern, duh).

My sister and I had a HUGE collection in our playroom: there was The Penguin That Hated the Cold, all of the Berenstain Bears (OMG – they have an official website… those crazy things didn’t exist when I was reading these books!), Winnie the Pooh, and so many more that were 1980’s-babies staples.

Unfortunately, I know many children aren’t that lucky… enter: First Book.

First Book is a campaign for literacy and for providing books to children all around the country and I am SO proud that my wonderful Pi Beta Phi is one of their partners (our national philanthropy is after all literacy!). I am in love with their blog and their What Book Got You Hooked? campaign:

Now through September 15, readers everywhere are invited to tell us about the first book from childhood that made reading fun, then help get more kids hooked by voting for the state to receive 50,000 new books for children in need.

A number of celebrities are supporting this year’s effort, including: Kenny Chesney, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Thompson, Edward Norton, Stephen Colbert, Ira Glass, and Barry Mannilow.

So, what book got you hooked?

North Carolina is 27th in the rankings right now for 50,000 new books for kids who are in need, so please vote before September 15th!

  • Got Extra School Supplies?

My sorority didn’t crown me Pi Phi’s “Most Philanthropic” for nothin’!

Since there will be plenty of back to school sales beginning soon at all the local office supply shops, I figured it’d be a great chance for anyone who is interested to pick up a few extras (potentially for free at the penny and buy one/get one sales!) to donate.

From my good friend, and fellow wine and silver blue-er, Adrianne… the passing along of a special request:

    FW: School Supplies Donation Request

As some of you may know, my husband is over-seas for a year working for the Department of Defense. At the camp where he works, there are classes being held to teach English for indigenous soldiers who work closely with American troops. They are in need of school supplies for adults. If you are interested in donating, I have included a list below of several items that have been requested. You can drop them off at my desk anytime, and I’ll ship them over. If you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks for your help!

    Supplies Needed:

    Paper
    Notebooks
    Pens
    Pencils
Books to practice the alphabet or basic words/phrases
    Flash cards

Remember, this is a class for adults but still at a pretty basic level. Thanks again!”

For anyone who is not at McKinney (where the email originated) to drop things off at the desk mentioned, please feel free to leave me a comment and I will be more than glad to help collect or to put you in touch with the folks at McKinney pitching in for the common good, too!

PS – For those of you who might have younger children, summer jobs as nannies, etc., this is a great way to reduce some of the clutter that you might not have any use for anymore!

  • What Southern Mamas Tell their Daughters…

…that the Rest of Y’all Should Know Too.

Kudos to BFFs in Boston for a killer post on a book that’s going to be added to my collection very soon!

Suck Your Stomach In & Put Some Color On!: What Southern Mamas Tell their Daughters that the Rest of Y’all Should Know Too, with its most appropriate tagline that became the title of this post, looks like an incredibly entertaining (and reminiscent) read.
