  • Any Redneck Women Out There?

    If so, I thought you might like to know that the original “Redneck Woman”, Gretchen Wilson, is performing this Saturday afternoon at City Limits Saloon in Raleigh!

    It’s actually a “Thank you!” and benefit event, put on by the folks at WQDR, City Limits, and Deep South Entertainment.

    WQDR and City Limits Saloon wanted to thank everyone who donated to the QDR Christmas Wish program that has been held on-air for the past few weeks, so to do that, they’re inviting those who donated out to special afternoon concert on December 19th with Gretchen Wilson.

    If you didn’t get a chance to hear about Christmas Wish or to donate, you can purchase tickets at the door for $10.00; however, space will be limited. All proceeds from the door go to benefit the QDR Christmas Wish 🙂

    Doors open at 12pm. No advance tickets are available.

  • Calling All Mommies, Awesome Aunts, and Grand Parents…

    As I was thinking about buying gifts for tomorrow’s Jingle Ball (www.jingleball.org), I realized that I obviously don’t do all that much toy buying!

    I am wondering if any of you awesome readers have any tips on how to maximize $25.00 in the world of toys?

    Since this is such a great cause, I want to try and contribute as much as I can with a $25.00 value of gifts donated, but I don’t want to buy things that will go unused. I know this is probably not the best time of year to try and work some magic for toys, but didn’t know if there were any good options outside of a traditional toy store that I should be looking at.

    Or, if there are any toy retailers, who always have a coupon available like Bed, Bath, and Beyond does for household items 😉

  • Breakfast with Santa for a Few Great Causes!

    I received a really special email today and can’t pass up the opportunity to share this event with readers.

    Second Annual Charity Breakfast Buffet with Santa
    Saturday December 12, 2009 8-11 am
    Spice Street Restaurant, Chapel Hill (Get directions from Google.)

    This event is organized by the resident physicians at UNC and this year we are supporting 4 charities: Ronald McDonald House, SECU Family House, NC Food Bank, and Toys for Tots.

    Last year we had a great event with over $700, 300 canned goods, and almost 400 toys donated. This year we have a bigger venue, a cheaper price, and an additional charity. Kids can take pictures with Santa (skip the mall lines and prices), make ornaments, and enjoy face painting all while benefiting the community.

    Spice Street will make a donation (to the Ronald McDonald House and SECU Family House) for every buffet purchased and we are asking people to bring canned goods or new toys.

    Adults $10 and kids $5 including tax and gratuity (cash, check and credit cards accepted)!

    PS – I was really excited to find out, when checking out the website, that Spice Street is owned by Giorgios Hospitality Group – family company of a good friend of mine! Many thanks to them for serving as host venue for this event. I’m really looking forward to their new Cary venture – Giorgio – coming this month.

  • N.C. Children’s Promise 2009

    They have already raised over $500,000.00 today.

    AMAZING.

    I called in a few hours ago to renew my $12.00 x 12 months donation.

    ANY little bit you can donate helps. The NC Children’s Hospital turns no child away based on their family’s ability to pay for treatment.

  • 16th Annual Jingle Ball

    I am SO pumped about going to my first Jingle Ball this year! It’s just so fabulous, in so many ways. The local young professionals who are organizing this have put together an amazing event… how very inspiring!

    Details via facebook/and an email from my friends at DowntownRaleigh.com:

    Each attendee is asked to bring an unwrapped holiday gift for a child valued at $20 value or more per person. For those not bringing a gift, admission will be $30 by cash or check at the door. The Capital City Clauses is a federally registered nonprofit corporation, and all contributions are tax-deductible. No one under 21 years of age will be admitted, and photo identification is required.

    Come eat, drink, dance and be merry for a good cause! Dress for this event is cocktail/party attire. Please join us and help bring brighter holidays to Wake County children.

    Gifts are considered tickets for this event and are your donated gift to the Salvation Army. Each participant will be granted entrance to the 2009 16th Annual Jingle Ball by bringing a new unwrapped toy valued at $20 or more or donating $30 cash or check with all proceeds going directly to the Salvation Army of Wake County.

    The Capital City Clauses are preparing for the 2009 Jingle Ball on Thursday, December 10th. The festivities will take place at Marbles Kids Museum, in downtown Raleigh, from 6:30PM until 10:30PM. Since the first Jingle Ball was held in 1994, we have given thousands of toys and articles of clothing to the needy children of Wake County, and we hope to have our most successful year yet in 2009!

    The Jingle Ball’s success hinges both on corporate sponsorships and on each attendee’s contribution of a toy (or clothing, books, games, etc) of $20 or greater value for admission. Our organization is comprised entirely of volunteers who help with the financing, planning, and executing of the Jingle Ball. All monetary proceeds go toward the event expenses, and all of the toys are distributed to Wake County children.

    As our primary goal is to collect toys at the door rather than money, we cannot depend upon the minimal door receipts we collect to finance the event. Therefore, the Capital City Clauses need corporate support to help offset the costs of hosting this event and to ensure its continued success.

  • I Voted for Doc

    Remember my post back in July on Wine to Water?

    As many of you long-time readers know, I’m already a big fan of Amra’s and their other establishment, Tobacco Road. This is SUCH a very cool event they’re hosting this week.

    The charity organization called Wine to Water, as seen on Larry King, raises funds through wine tastings to be able to help 3rd world countries find healthy clean drinking water sources for their villages.

    On Thursday July 23, come to Amra’s after work or around 6:30 to help support this awesome and worthy cause!

    Wine To Water is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit aid organization focused on providing clean water to needy people around the world. Over 1 billion people in the world today lack access to adequate water and sanitation. We are devoted to fighting this epidemic.Wine symbolizes fortune in our society. Our goal is to give the fortunate population an opportunity to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves.

    Well, it appears as if our friend Doc, founder of Wine to Water, has been nominated alongside great company for CNN Heroes.

  • Toys for Tots and the Wolfpack!

    Toys for Tots is a campaign that my family and I have participated in through various groups over the years (for example: the Ray Price Harley-Davidson Toys for Tots Toy Run).

    Here’s another great opportunity to do a little good while having a lot of fun!

    NC State head football coach Tom O’Brien expects his players to be champions in the classroom, in the community and on the football field. As part of that effort, the NC State football program announced today that it will be partnering with Coca-Cola and Harris Teeter to collect new toys and donations throughout the 2009 football season to benefit the U.S. Marine Corp’s Toys for Tots campaign.

    During each game this season, Coca-Cola will donate $500 to the NC State/Toys for Tots Fund for every touchdown the Wolfpack scores. At the conclusion of the season, representatives from the Wolfpack football program will use the funds to purchase toys that will be donated to Toys for Tots and distributed to needy children. During the 2008 season, Coca-Cola contributed $17,000 for the 34 Wolfpack touchdowns scored.

    Coca Cola will also join with Harris Teeter throughout the Triangle to set up drop-off locations for fans to donate toys. From November 5 – December 10, Toys for Tots/Coca-Cola displays with toy-donation bins will be located in Raleigh-area Harris Teeter locations. Fans can drop off new toys to any of the participating Harris Teeter locations (see below for list of locations.)

    Football fans in the Triangle will have an additional opportunity to donate to the cause when NC State hosts Clemson at Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday, November 14. A toy drive will take place in the Wolfpack Fan Zone, located in front of the RBC Center. Coca-Cola and Toys for Tots representatives will be on hand to collect toys in the Wolfpack Fan Zone up until kick-off. Although all toy donations are appreciated, new toys for toddlers ages 2-4 and pre-teens ages 10-12 are needed most. Cash donations will also be accepted at the stadium gates until kick-off, and at the toy donation area in Fan Zone. Fans donating a new toy or a cash gift at the Fan Zone on game day will also receive a free 2 Liter from Coca-Cola and Harris Teeter.

  • A Brittany’s Battle Update

    I have quite often posted about Brittany’s Battle here, so I thought it’d be a great time for an update (via the BBI email newsletter) to let you know about all of the great things that the Coppedge family, their friends, and family are doing in memory of Brittany.

    Second Annual Angel Gala
    Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 22, 2009, and join us for our 2nd Annual Angel Gala. This year’s event will be bigger and better than ever! We will have a light buffet dinner, dancing, silent and on-line auctions and much more.

    2009 Free to Breathe
    The 2009 annual Free To Breathe event wil be held in Raleigh on Saturday, November 7, 2009, on NCSU’s Centennial Campus. We would love to have you come out and support the event. Better yet, lace up those sneakers and join Brittany’s Battle! Whether you run the 5K or walk the 1K, come out and celebrate the survivors and honor those who’ve battled and lost.

    And probably the most important part of all:

    We had the opportunity last month to attend the ribbon cutting for the new NC Cancer Hospital on the campus of UNC in Chapel Hill. The hospital is magnificent!! We toured several areas – including the children’s ward and the Resource Center. We are blessed to have such a wonderful facility in our state.

    We were very pleased to be able to present the Patient and Family Resource Center with another donation from Brittany’s Battle – thanks to all of you! We were very moved when we were told that our last donation is being used to have wigs made for teenage cancer patients. As you can imagine, their choice for wigs is often limited.


    Amazing! It is so moving to read about the great things the hospital is being able to do as a result of the contributions that BBI has been able to make… thanks to the support of so many great people.

  • The Pink Heals Tour

    Hot on the “heels” of my “Fight Like a Girl” post from earlier this month, here is another very cool event I couldn’t wait to share with readers. Many thanks to Ashton for passing it along!

    On Sunday October 4, 2009, The Pink Heals Tour, formerly The Pink Ribbon Tour, will be appearing in Raleigh during their country wide journey.

    The Pink Heals Tour is a nonprofit organization founded in Phoenix, Arizona by firefighter Dave Graybill that drives Pink Fire Trucks across the United States to support women in their fight against cancer and inspire men to get involved. This year’s tour includes three pink fire trucks and the sculpted Ribbon of Hope. It is a unique opportunity to dress in the Tours pink turnout gear and helmets and sign the fire trucks in memory or honor of loved ones.

    The Raleigh Fire Department is hosting this year’s event with The Pink Heals Tour to raise cancer awareness at Triangle Towne Center between Dillard’s and Macaroni Grille from the hours of 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm. We extend an invite to your department to be a part of this community event. Please spread the word to your family and friends and come join the fun for this very important cause.

    I mean, what sounds better for a Monday night?

    SO pumped that I’ll be back from Vegas (leaving Thursday AM out of Charlotte!) in time for this! I haven’t been back to the Brewpub since the first time Nick, Adrianne, Joey, and I tried it just after opening, so this is a great reason for me to return. (And give them a chance to recapture me as a customer. The lackluster service, boring food, and scant beverage selection for the non-beer drinker didn’t do it for me last time.)

    I’m all about a second chance though! (The first few weeks can be awkward for a new establishment with a new staff.)
