  • I Shouldn’t Tell You This…

    …because I’d like to keep my odds of winning high, but… 518 West has a Facebook Page and they’re giving away a $25 gift certificate.

    I know right – awesome!

    I have been there at least once a month for the last six months: it’s where all but the most recent skirt! After Work events have been, Amber and Daniel had their rehearsal dinner there in September ’08, and E. Riley just hosted our bridal luncheon there two weeks ago.

    If you haven’t been, you’ve missed out.

    For lunch, get the Grilled Pear Insalate – I swear by it.

    Grilled Pear Insalate

    Grilled Bosc pear with field greens, walnuts, gorgonzola and a honey-walnut vinaigrette…

    small… $5.50
    large… $8.75

    I’m hungry just thinking about it! And such a good deal for only $8.75 for the largest portion.

    PS: They have a blog, too.

    PS #2: If you win, you have to take me to lunch. Sound fair?

    PS #3: The boys who valet are the nicest ever. (It’s complimentary and you should tip them. They do an excellent job.) Note: I valet when it’s cold and when I’m running late. Duh.

  • February is Breast cancer Support Month at Amedeo’s North

    Amedeo’s is pretty much a local legend in itself and their sister restaurant, Amedeo’s North is hosting a great benefit with a creative menu to fit this month:

    February Named Breast Cancer Support Month at Amedeo’s North Italian Restaurant

    Amedeo’s North’s owners, Rick and Lisa DeAngelis have partnered with the Pretty in Pink Foundation and made February Breast Cancer Awareness at their north Raleigh restaurant – in honor and memory of Rick’s mother, Betty DeAngelis.

    The restaurant is located in the Northridge Shopping Center, at 6006 Falls of Neuse Road, near Spring Forest Road in North Raleigh.

    The kick off to the month of special support will be on Tuesday, February 3rd. The Painted Ponies Y Princess Tribe will be selling Pretty in Pink wrist bracelets and jars of Amedeo’s North pasta sauce from 5:30 to 7:30pm to benefit the foundation. 10% of dinner sales each Tuesday in February AND 10% of Lunch Specials Monday through Friday all month will also benefit Pretty in Pink Foundation

    There will be a special Memory Candle TeaLight Luminaria – people are welcome to purchase a Memory Candle in honor of a loved one, in memoriam or as a survivor. Lit candles with names written in pink will be displayed in restaurant. All proceeds go to Pretty in Pink Foundation.

    In addition there will be a featured “pink” item each Tuesday and an extra percentage of related sales will also benefit the Foundation. 2/10 Mini desserts special; 2/17 Special entree w/Pink sauce; 2/24: Birthday Cake.

    Customers can register throughout February to win prizes; the drawing for prizes will be held on Sunday 3/1 to remember Betty and celebrate her birthday.

    We just might have to venture north of Amedeo’s on Western at some point in February for this great event.

  • Snow in Raleighwood!

    My camera did NOT want to work with all the bright white this morning (that’s it – I’m getting the digital SRL THIS WEEK!) and then somehow along the way, I deleted everything we took before 6pm. *Doh!*

    Please pardon how dark everything is…

    Tank’s First *Real* Snow
    (he’s seen a bit before, nothing like this though… Delta’s been with us for a blizzard before)

    On YouTube

    and In Pictures

    And some of my local favorites:Whit’s Snow Day
    Snow over Glenwood South
    Matt’s amazing pics on RaleighSkyline.com
    Nick just confirmed it, we received 5.5 inches here!

  • Attention “Raleigh” People

    This also came to me today via the Ruckus email newsletter:

    It’s a free service, but I would have paid good money for this a few nights ago when it was freeeeezing and I was refusing to leave the townhouse… or cook.

    PS – I put “Raleigh” as such because it looks like most restaurants are in Cary, Morrisville, and Durham… but real Raleigh kids know that it’s all relative… unless you’re in North NORTH Raleigh.

  • More Flying Biscuit Love

    Our local Flying Biscuit, a la Cameron Village, opens Monday!

    And a fantastic wedding guest gesture from EAD:

    “Someone just delivered biscuits–are they a gift from God? I don’t know why they’re here but I’m not going to question it.”Mmm… can’t wait!

  • {Double Post} The Shop with a Conscience

    I can’t believe this is another thing I’ve never remember to blog about, because it’s one of my Cameron Village favorites – Beleza: A Fair Trade Boutique.

    Described on their website as a place where:…you will find unique and extraordinary textiles and hats, jewelry and art that catch your eye and touch your heart.

    Beyond offering beautiful things, Beleza exists to provide hard working people from countries around the world – and here in the US – essential support to provide daily necessities for their families.

    While the store is fair trade, the major emphasis of Beleza is to treat people as they should be treated, and assist in global economic development.

    Beleza is owned and operated by two of the most wonderful people I know: P. Dail and his wife Sara.

    I received the following email today from Sara about a new addition coming to their store that I am really excited about:

    Recently we met Audias from Honduras. Born without arms, he paints with his feet. We will have his work in the store very soon and encourage you to come see this work. Audias has no other means of support. We plan to host a special event for you to meet him.I’ll be sure to update when I hear more details!

    In the mean time, go check out Beleza and become an addict of their amazing selection of goods with a heart, too.

  • Some Good {Green} Tips from My City

    I love Raleigh – email Chris Riley to subscribe to the weekly enewsletter.

    City of Raleigh Urges Residents to Reduce Waste During the Holidays
    On average, Raleigh residents produce about 3,000 tons of garbage each week. That number jumps dramatically to 3,750 tons per week during the holiday period, from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day.

    To reduce the amount of waste taken to the landfill, the City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services (SWS) Department and the City’s curbside recycling program, Raleigh Recycling, are encouraging residents to follow holiday waste reduction tips. SWS and Raleigh Recycling have joined other agencies in issuing these tips so everyone can enjoy a “Green” Christmas. Actually many of the tips can be used throughout the year, not just the holidays.

    The holiday waste reduction tips are thorough and cover a variety of topics. These include holiday decorations, parties, holiday food, holiday cards, gift wrapping, enviro-shopping, gift giving, green gift ideas, gifts of time, gifts of charity, gifts for grandparents, homemade gifts, homemade gifts/non-homemade gifts made from reused materials and decorations, zero budget gifts, mailing packages, changing gift giving traditions, and energy savings.

    To view all of the holiday waste reduction tips offered by SWS and Raleigh Recycling, visit the City of Raleigh’s website at www.raleighnc.gov.

    Here are a few of the tips:
    * Decorate your home, tree and centerpiece with
    holly, cedar, berries, cranberries, popcorn, fruits and nuts, all of which can be composted or used for bird food after use;

    * To add a special touch to your decorating consider using memorabilia such as a child’s first shoe or teething ring, old jewelry, mementos from vacations, small stuffed animals and toys, holiday card ornaments, miniature toy cars, cookie cutters, dressed up dolls, or edible cookie ornaments;

    * Email holiday party invitations making it clear that the invitation is in lieu of a traditional card;

    * Eliminate disposal plates, cups and napkins from your holiday party. Instead, use “real” dishes and cloth napkins that can be washed and reused. Everyone loves hanging around the kitchen so make cleaning up part of the party;

    * Give home-baked goodies in reusable holiday tins;

    * Recycle all beverage and food cans and bottles from your holiday gathering;

    * Buy the highest content post-consumer recycled holiday greeting cards that you can find. These cards are becoming easier to find in stores. Look for the recycling symbol inside a circle or a statement that says the cards are made from recycled paper;

    * Reuse wrapping and ribbon when possible or purchase gift bags that can be reused as an alternative;

    * Call the toll-free phone numbers on unwanted holiday catalogs and have your name taken off their mailing lists;

    * Give non-materialistic “green” gifts that do not require wrapping, such as gift certificates for massages, restaurants, cooking classes, sailing lessons, etc. Experiences are remembered long after other presents wear out;

    * Help someone recycle by buying a can-crusher, recycling or compost bin, or a tote cart to help get the bin to the curb;

    * Prepare homemade soups or dinners that can be frozen for future use;

    * Give away — not throw away — the last great book you bought. Give it to someone who enjoys your taste and later the two of you can talk about it;

    * Save gift boxes, bows and ribbon for use next holiday season; and,

    * Start off 2009 by making waste reduction your No. 1 New Year’s resolution. Commit to purchasing longer lasting products, such as compact florescent light bulbs and rechargeable batteries. You will save money and have less trash to discard.

    And the next headline from this week’s eNews:City to Recycle Discarded Christmas Trees
    What’s an easy and environmentally friendly way to get rid of your Christmas tree following the holidays? Raleigh residents should place their discarded trees at the curb with regular yard waste on their scheduled collection day.
    …
    All natural Christmas trees collected by the City’s Solid Waste Services Department, including those taken to the Yard Waste Center, are recycled into wood chips and mulch. These products are sold to the general public at the Yard Waste Center, which can be reached at 250-2728.
    Can you believe how much our waste increases during this short time period?
