  • Neighborhood Drinks at Sidebar in Cary Downtown

Downtown Cary, formally known as “Cary Downtown”, is starting to grow up beyond banks and longtime storefronts and is now attracting a variety of tenants including the newest: Sidebar Drinks + Company.

Proprietor Matthew Bettinger, who you might recognize as the general manager from Downtown Raleigh’s C. Grace and Empress Room, has paired his cocktail savvy with his wife’s talented eye for aesthetics and put together a beautiful 21+ gathering space with an experienced cocktail menu and bountiful behind-the-bar selections.

Located at 215 East Chatham Street, Sidebar is open Wednesday-Friday at 4 p.m. (closing at midnight Wednesday-Thursday, 2 a.m. Friday) and opens at noon on Saturday and Sunday (closing at 2 a.m. and midnight, respectively).

We visited on a brisk Sunday afternoon and since we had Delta Dog along for the visit (our consistent Sunday companion), enjoyed a few rounds on the patio.

Sidebar is a pretty little corner bar that neighbors Pro’s Epicurean Market & Cafe as well as Bond Brothers Beer Company. Since we visited on a Sunday afternoon, the other neighboring businesses (brewery excluded) were closed, so there was ample parking in the surrounding business center lots.

Be sure to plan a visit on an evening when Pro’s is open and grab an incredible charcuterie plate to enjoy with your cocktails, but a word of note, the brewery was hoppin’ while we were there, which means lots of unattended minis making the business center sidewalks their personal playspaces and they were not using their “inside voices”. Buyer beware. 😉

While there, I selected two of the “House Cocktails” to enjoy and both were downright delightful:

    Seven Amazing Benefits – $10
    Vodka, Lemon Syrup, Tamarind, Cucumber

    Bruleed Greyhound – $10
Gin, Grapefruit, Burned Sugar, Lime, Salt

I’m definitely a garnish girl as it is, but that “Burned Sugar” on the Bruleed Greyhound was stupid good. I’d come back again for that itself. Cocktail on the side, please.

    snoop dogg that's delicious

Final Take: Do check out Sidebar in Cary when you get the chance. It makes for a nice afternoon stop. Tell Matt that Lisa sent you!

PS: Yes, I found a way to work TWO Snoop Dogg gifs into one blog post. Perfection!

  • Super Bowl Ads 2018

    Super Bowl Ads 2018

I have to admit, I’m a purist – I don’t want to see a sneak preview of any spoilers of this year’s Super Bowl ads. I would rather watch them live during the big game as they were intended to be.

    Budweiser – “Stand By You”

When I saw this ad tonight (Tuesday, January 30), it caught my attention. Partly because of the messaging (Community! America!) and partly because of the beautiful rendition of “Stand By Me“… one of my all-time favorite songs.

This ad… it gives me all the feels. If there had been a Budweiser puppy included in it, I definitely would have shed a tear:

(If you have trouble viewing the embedded the video above, here’s the direct link: https://youtu.be/CxGUmtRLm5g.)

It wasn’t until I went to YouTube searching for the ad to share it here on my blog that I read that it was part of Budweiser’s 2018 Super Bowl ad offerings. Womp, womp. However, that does make it currently #1 on my list of favorites for this year.

This ad does a great job of telling one of the lesser-known stories of Budweiser – how much water they provide in times of crisis and need. Some will criticize saying it’s a major corporate entity, and it’s not authentic… blah, blah, blah. But this is a brand with incredibly strong roots in American culture which is spending a chunk of its ad dollars to humanize their brand a little. I approve!

Tune back in on Sunday evening where I’ll update with my thoughts and feedback on other big spenders!

  • Kitchen Hacks: Crock-Pot Sweet Potatoes, InstaPot, and More

Happy day-after-Christmas, everyone – I hope you all enjoyed a very merry long weekend of downtime with loved ones!

Yes, Delta's toboggan reads "CHILL". Also, check her legwarmers! ;-)
Yes, Delta’s toboggan reads “CHILL”. Also, check her legwarmers! 😉

At the Jeffries Casa de Chaos, we had a very foodie round of gift giving and receiving. Manfriend and my parents both gifted me new attachments for our KitchenAid Stand Mixer… I’m one of those people who actually use it a few times each month, if not weekly. Manfriend selected the Vegetable Sheet Slicer:

I’m pretty excited about all the vegetable lasagnas in our future, but also the breakfast casserole options using thin sheets of vegetables!

Mom and Dad sent me home with the Spiralizer attachment:

You may remember I already told you about my smaller spiralizer and how much I love using it, this is only going to ante up my spiralizing game. I’m also gearing up to use some apple recipes with this guy! I’ll share our best successes here in future updates.

Last, Little Sister (who is currently living overseas serving in the US Army… thank you, Mandy!) shipped an InstantPot Ultra for my enjoyment in 2018. I have already been diligently googling “Vegetarian Instant Pot” recipes this morning and can’t wait to get more experienced this this handy kitchen device. I’ve never used a pressure cooker before, so I have a mild case of anxiety about totally destroying my kitchen, but I have a feeling I’ll be able to watch YouTube videos to fill in any questions I have that the user manual skips over.

And no matter the distance, nothing could keep me and Mandy from sharing Christmas mimosas with each other. Thank you, technology!

Last, if you’re like me and working this week and won’t have a ton of downtime for healthy cooking to head into the new year, please try this foolproof recipe for baking sweet potatoes in the Crock-Pot: http://paleomg.com/stupid-easy-perfectly-cooked-sweet-potatoes/!

I *love* filling up the Crock-Pot when I pop home for lunch and have dinner ready to go when I walk in the house… because I rarely make it home “on time”. I experimented with this sweet potato option just before the holidays and it was amazingly simple and way better than running the oven for-ev-er just to bake a single sweet potato or two. I sauteed a few pieces of vegetarian sausage and served them with the baked sweet potato for a perfectly satisfying quick dinner.

  • 2017 Holiday Gift Guide

‘Tis the season for gifting and more often than not, many of us could use a little help in the inspiration department. Here are some of my absolute favorite gifts I’ve received and even a few items I’ve wish-listed for myself this year!

    Spiralizer

Hamilton Beach Spiralizer, 2 Speed Motorized Vegetable Slicer (59998) – $32.99
I received this one last year from my family for Christmas and I’m absolutely obsessed with it. This is a great gift for the at-home gourmet on your list or the person who’s aiming to eat healthier in the new year. I have used this almost exclusively for making faux pasta noodles from veggies and the dishes have been out-of-this world good. (The “Avocado-Basil Zucchini Noodles with Chile-Lime Shrimp & Corn” dish I found on Pinterest is hands down one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in my life.)

    Candle Warmer

Have someone on your list who loves candles? Help them savor the last bit of their favorite scents once the wick won’t stay lit any longer with a candle warmer.

Decorative (Read: More Expensive, But Relatively Budget-Friendly as Far as Home Decor Items Go…) Versions

Candle Warmers Etc. Carriage Candle Warmer Lantern, Oil Rubbed Bronze – $49.99

Candle Warmers Etc. Mission Candle Warmer Lantern, Brick – $34.99

Budget (Read: El Cheapo But Totally Functional) Version

    Darice 1199-15 Candle Warmer, Large – $6.99

I had one of the cheap, plain ones above in the past and used it for many years. This year, I’m hoping for one of the more decorative options listed above as I will get tons of use out of this gift!

Note: When you’re searching for candle warmers, you’ll have to look closely. Many are for simply melting fragrant waxes and probably aren’t safe for warming glass jars that may crack or shatter. The items I listed above are specifically for the purpose of warming jars of candles.

    Travel Wallet/Organizer

    Hello Wander Travel Wallet
There’s nothing worse than fumbling through your giant carry on at the airport with the line queuing up behind you. I have three+ trips requiring air travel on the books already for 2018, so a wallet specifically designed for international travel is high on my list. Opt for a faux leather option and you’ll keep the price <$40! Look for one that allows easy access to a passport and photo ID/credit cards. I don't worry so much about one that can hold boarding passes anymore because ? (cell phone boarding pass = life). I'm also not usually one for bright-colored accessories, but a bold hue could stand out in the bottom of your bulky carry on. Just sayin'... For the item I listed above, the online reviews say it doesn't hold USD dollar bills just right, so you may want to explore Pinterest for others if you're a cash carrier. Me? Notsomuch.

    Belmto Moon Barette

    Belmto Moon Barette
Maybe I’m obsessed with the cute haircut, maybe I’m just underwhelmed by how much I’ve been living in ponytail world lately. Regardless, this $11.90 gold barette makes for a great girlfriend/co-worker/gift exchange buy.

    Stay Tuned

There’s more to come as I continue my shopping for the holiday season. I’ll pop in here a few more times with updates of fresh new ideas. Please stop in again soon, y’all!

Until then, I leave you this video of my girl Reese Witherspoon and her funny take on how “social media is hard” and other tech woes of a southern gal:

PS: Amazon.com affiliate links are included in some of the items above. I appreciate you using them if you decide to purchase so that I’ll receive a small commission on the sale. Running a self-hosted WordPress blog isn’t free and I appreciate your help in keeping things running smoothly around here! ?

  • Dog Moms: Just Say “No” to Esurance

About a year ago I was all over social media sharing my excitement that I got a great auto rate from Esurance. It’s an online/app-based business and their South Carolina-based customer support phone team is fantastic.

You can imagine my disappointment when I called this morning for a homeowners quote and found out they won’t offer us insurance because this vicious lady pictured below is on the list of breeds they don’t allow. (PS: She’s a mutt from SPCA of Wake County, so no one knows which “breeds” she actually represents.)

Delta Dog is 13 years old, so if she’s biting, it’s because you’ve disturbed her 12th nap of the day. (I’d bite you too.) Truth be told, Johnnie and I doing DIY projects on our home assisted by Bud Light are a larger liability than she is…

As many of you know, we’ve welcomed many abandoned furry friends into our home over the years. I absolutely will NOT be doing business with a company with incomprehensible breed restrictions like this, so needless to say, they’re losing my auto insurance business, too.

Tell me friends, who is your favorite auto + homeowner combo? (We’re with Farm Bureau now and the constant rate hikes are why I’m shopping around…)

Sorry, Esurance… you messed with the wrong #DogMom. ?

  • Cocktail Experiments: Tuscan Orange Honeysuckle

My manfriend works for a company that represents spirits brands in the state of NC and as a result, he occasionally brings home “innovation” or new flavor products for us to try. Earlier this year he brought Smirnoff’s “Wild Honey” vodka home for us to try and I’ve been racking my brain for tasty options for this *almost*-too-sugary-sweet flavor. I say *almost* because I was confident we could find some complementary flavors that needed to be balanced by the vodka’s honey sweetness… and we did!

More on that to come… but first, what didn’t work. I started with our usual go-to house mixer of Ginger Ale but the combination was just too sweet for my palate. So I started researching what flavors pair best with honey and found the mention of blood orange. I hopped on my Instacart app* (more on that soon!) and found that although it’s November, Whole Foods carries blood oranges fresh in store. I also ordered Whole Foods’ Blood Orange Italian Soda and waited for the delivery!

I have been a longtime fan of blood oranges because of their vibrant color and since my days in the South of France where they were pretty prevalent. If you can find them fresh here stateside, grab a few and enjoy.

    The Result: Tuscan Orange Honeysuckle

    Orange Honeysuckle Cocktail

    Ingredients (So simple!):

    • One fresh blood orange, sliced
    • Smirnoff Wild Honey
    • Whole Foods Blood Orange Italian Soda
    • Ice

    Directions:

Squeeze a few slices or muddle a few slices of fresh blood orange in a glass with lots of ice. Add equal parts vodka and Italian soda, or vary proportion to taste preference. Stir and enjoy – preferably, poolside.

Overall, this drink was still sweet and tasted much like summer in a glass. Although not perfect for our first fall chill, I’m glad I have a simple go-to recipe for this sweet spirit to keep top of mind and I can absolutely tone the sweetness down with a blood orange sparkling water instead of Italian soda. (I actually had ordered one from Whole Foods, buy my Instacart* shopper said it had been discontinued. Womp, womp.)

Since I love drinking “appropriate for the season” cocktails, my next venture will be into a whiskey cocktail that calls for vodka and honey and see where it takes me. I’m thinking a boozy apple cider is where it’s at. Stay tuned!

*Please Note: The Instacart links I’ve used above give me a referral credit if you sign up to try the service based on my recommendation. You get a credit, too… so sign up for the free trial if you like the idea!

  • Summer Favorites: Sun Bum Sunscreen

I first found this line of sun protection products at Topsail Beach a few years ago in a surf shop and am so glad it’s widely available now!

    Sun Bum sunscreen
The Sun Bum sunscreen lotion I use is SPF 30 which helps protect you from the nasty stuff (sunburn, skin cancer) and smells amazing. Very beachy. Goes on smooth and rubs in easily.

What really makes the Sun Bum collection tops on my list is that the products won’t clog your pores and most importantly – are not tested on animals!

You can find the sunscreens in lotion and sprays for about $16.00 – I recommend stocking up toward the end of the summer retail season (now-August) when major retailers discount. Especially if you’re in NC like me and it’ll be sunshiny hot through the first few weeks of October.

PS: This is a non-solicited, non-compensated blog post. But if the fine folks at the Bum wanted to send me some more Sun Bum, I wouldn’t refuse the delivery. ?

  • Fireside Cocktails: Warm Peppermint Patty

It’s officially Day 1 of snow and we’ve just started the fireplace… and our third movie since last night. This calls for a hot cocktail!

    Warm Peppermint Patty

This thing literally tastes like a melted York Peppermint Patty. Rich, tasty, and boozy. Cheers to all of that, y’all.

    The Necessities:

    • 8 ounces warm almond milk
    • 1 packet hot chocolate mix
    • 2 shots (about 3 oz.) Smirnoff Peppermint Twist

Mix warm milk and hot chocolate mix thoroughly. Add Smirnoff and gently stir to combine. Top with marshmallows or cookie crumbles.

  • Get Snowed In with This Wintry Cocktail

Bailey’s has released a vegan almond milk liqueur and with the impending snowmaggedon coming for Raleigh, I decided it was a great option for experimenting with to come up with a cocktail that I’m going to enjoy from the comfort of the couch.

I blended a shot of Ketel One vodka, a shot and a half of Bailey’s Almande, and several heaping spoonfuls of Talenti Hazelnut Chocolate Chip gelato. (Garnished with a shake of nutmeg and a cinnamon stick.)

I’m calling it “Chance of Accumulation” in the spirit of tonight’s forecast.

    Helllllloooooo, snowy weekend!

  • Master’s Thesis Status: COMPLETED!

    Master’s Thesis Status: COMPLETED!

All 110 pages of my master’s thesis on location-based marketing were submitted to NC State’s Research Advisor for the Global Luxury Management program on Tuesday, August 30, 2016. I’m pleased to say that all of the hard work that went into preparing a project of this size paid off with a final grade of 18/20 received. One of the few criticisms received I enjoyed had a good laugh about: “Overall a good study, but the lit review read more like ad copy that an analysis of the literature.” After 10 years, I just can’t turn the copywriting mode off in my brain! 😉

I invite you read a brief synopsis of the report below and if you’re interested, request a complimentary copy of the full-text PDF at the end of this blog post. For those of you who don’t have time to read through all 100+ pages at once (and who would?), I’ll publishing smaller sections throughout 2017 here as individual posts and case studies to make it easier to digest. Stay tuned!

    Location-Based Opportunities for Brand Marketing

WITH EMPHASIS ON APPLICATION WITHIN LUXURY INDUSTRIES

    Abstract

Audiences are now more connected than ever – with no signs of slowing down their adoption rates of mobile smartphone use, e-commerce, and other digital mediums. What are the high-level technologies currently utilized in the consumer marketplace available for brands and marketers to utilize location-based marketing to reach these connected audiences? Additionally, what are the current best practices based on efforts from brands and marketing practitioners across personal, transportation, and experiential segments – with specific emphasis on luxury industries or brands, as available? Using trade media, published research, primary interviews and surveys of working professionals, as well as two real-world experiments, “Location-Based Opportunities for Brand Marketing” offers a survey of the current marketing landscape, assesses industry awareness of location-based marketing technologies and practices, and consideration of future opportunities to come. The uses of beacons, geo-fencing, mobile applications, online advertising, email marketing, point of sale and customer relationship management systems in the processes of customer acquition and customer retention are explored.

    Preface

Nearly 100 pages of research, analysis, and opinions don’t come easy. As such, I would be remiss in not acknowledging and thanking the following family, friends, and colleagues for their support in this endeavor:

    • Mom and Dad: For your perpetual support of my wishes to return to graduate school at NC State University – and the four-month overseas semester at SKEMA Sophia Antipolis in France that came along with that undertaking. Mandy and Joe, as well, for your continuous encouragement along the way.
    • Johnnie Nobling: For your often-tested patience (“Did she just call you ‘patient’?”), for being a consistent source of enthusiasm and confidence in the long hours endured from the first day I stepped back on campus in August 2015, and for pushing me to not just complete this project, but to make it something I could truly be proud of creating with long-standing professional purpose.
    • My GLM (Global Luxury Management) Peers: I feel so fortunate to have formed lasting relationships with each of you during this crazy ride through grad school. Long live the Facebook messages and group texts that got us through this!
    • To the 40+ professional contacts who participated in the accompanying survey (even being so wonderful as to share it with other, too), provided resources from their own brands and publications, as well as the dozen+ generous souls who were so giving with their time and opinions to help my research efforts…
    • To NCSU Libraries staff and Amanda Elam for your incredibly professional and speedy responses for providing the resources needed to complete this thesis from the academic perspective…
    • To the numerous friends, clients, and colleagues who checked in via emails, text messages, and the like to wish me luck with the final preparation of this thesis and to provide encouragement along the way…

1,000 “THANK YOU”s would not nearly be enough gratitude for the support you’ve provided me, so I hope you all know I’m sincerely grateful for each and every one of you. And to anyone else I’ve forgotten to mention, I hope I remembered to say “Thanks!” at the time of your help.

    Executive Summary

American and global consumers are more connected than ever with the potential to spend almost immediately in both brick-and-mortar and digital businesses. What are today’s opportunities for reaching them at a time when they’re considering purchasing – or even earlier, by providing the inspiration to purchase? And can be we begin to personalize on a one-on-one level, like so many luxury consumers have come to expect, to improve the return rates on investments made into new customer acquisition as well as existing customer retention and loyalty development?

Thanks to modern-day marketing technology, brands and marketers have what feels like never-ending access to generating first-party data and leveraging third-party provider systems to create and fulfill their nearly boundless imaginative ideas for bringing new customers into business doors and keeping them spending over time.

From utilizing geo-fenced advertising (that is only displayed to smartphone or web audiences who are accurately identified as being within a specific targeted location) to drive interest for a brick-and-mortar business, to using point of sale data segments defined as “at risk” to re-activate potentially valuable and nearly lost customers, in 2016 we’re beginning to scratch the surface of what it means to be able to communicate valuable messages to an increasingly connected audience.

While over 80% of respondents to the enclosed survey on location-based marketing reported having “heard of location-based marketing technologies like geofencing and beacons”, a full 50% of the same survey respondents indicated they have yet to utilize them in their businesses and brands and 15% reported being unsure if their business or brand had made use of them or not. The following research compiles the experiences of over a dozen business and marketing professionals to provide a broad look at the products and services that exist today to help brands and marketers both acquire and attain customers and clients using a technology-first, location-driven approach. As one survey respondent noted, deploying beacons and other sensors allow us to track store visits, which in turns “builds audience data for retargeting, but also measures foot traffic. The latter enables brands to measure the effectiveness of their campaigns, and attribute ad spend to more visits.” As brand marketers are continually required to justify their spending, the building of data and ability to measure effectiveness cannot be underscored.

As best practices in this space will continue to evolve alongside technology and research, I invite those interested in this topic to visit my website, Lisa-Jeffries.com, where I’ll continue to write more on the subject and welcome your comments and examples you find of real world best practices in use.
