  • Great News on the Country Music Front

    For those of you who are listening to XM Radio (specifically: Highway 16), you may already know this as I heard it just this morning. (And during Jason‘s weekend visit to the Opry, which aired on Nashville 11, he also mentioned that this was coming!)

    Jason’s releasing “Where I’m From” at the end of this month and his new cd is coming out in March!

    AND WQDR is once again having the Halloween Harvest Ball to benefit the SPCA (confirmed with QDR lead-chick, Lisa McKay) and other local friends of our furry friends.

    Black Flower Opens in Glenwood South

    “From an unassuming building just around the corner from the bustle of Glenwood South comes a different kind of buzz, one that will last well after the night’s end…at least that’s the kind of atmosphere Paul Lewis and Jamie Saad want to create at their new bar Black Flower. Located at 517 West Peace Street (just east of Mojo’s), one of its main goals is to promote Raleigh’s culture.”

    Click through to read the rest of the Melissa Santos’ great article. Nick and I went to visit last weekend and had a great time (and of course, Jamie made sure to have a bottle of Firefly on hand for me… because he’s awesome).

    Double plus (and I hope he doesn’t wring my neck for giving away industry secrets), but he dished that the black semi-circle seating may or may not have been reclaimed from the part of Buckhead that hasn’t been flipped and holds the leftovers from the post-Jillian’s renovation. Being the rockstar bar owners Paul and Jamie are, they found the instructions for recovering them on Google and saved them from the landfill – I support it!

  • Cherry Bounce

    What a true Raleigh-kid tradition!

    If you’re not a big Downtowner, here’s what you’ve missed the past few weeks (err… months) in the blogosphere:

    “Cherry” is alraedy a major part of my drink and dessert vocabularies… can’t wait to give this a try at Deep South the Bar, soon! Here’s a list of 6 different recipes for Cherry Bounce from cooks.com – be sure to report back if you give any a try!

    Could be an interesting fall cocktail experiment for me to take on, as well…

    11/10 Update: I’ve had the Deep South cocktail… it was yummy. (Skip the martini glass, ask for a rocks or pint glass. It’s my own little trick to not spilling red drink all down a white top.)

    Party with skirt! and Dress for Success

    The most awesome party ever happens this month, and you are so invited. skirt! has teamed up with the Triangle chapter of Dress for Success to hold our first-ever skirt! After Work event.

    What is it? A skirt drive to benefit Dress for Success.

    What should I bring? Skirts, of course! But we’ll also be accepting jewelry, scarves, belts, and other interview attire.

    Where? The gorgeous, delicious 518 West Italian Café on Glenwood South.

    When? 5:30 til 7:30pm. Tuesday, September 30.

    Why? Because it’s a benefit for an amazing women’s cause, a chance to meet the skirt! team, as well as some of the men and women who have appeared in our issues. Oh, and did we mention we’ll be giving away prizes?

    How much? It’s free to get in, and the signature skirtini will be $5 for those of you with donations. Other drinks will be regular price.

    If you’re wondering what a skirtini is, this is where you come in. We’re currently running a recipe contest for the signature drink of skirt! Is the skirtini sassy, light, and fruity? Dry and witty? Or rich, elegant, and chocolate-y? You decide!

    Come up with a recipe for the ultimate skirtini, and enter it here. The winning beverage will be christened The skirtini, and will be served at our skirt! After Work events every month, starting with Skirts for Success on September 30. See you there! And get mixing!

    More Info: CapitalCityBikefest.com/    Even if you’re not a Harley-enthusiast, this is still a VERY cool event to head out to just to check out some of the amazing custom bikes (a huge draw if you have young boys – this actually is a very family-friendly event). There is lots of live music, entertainment, good food that can be purchased from vendors, merchandise for sale, BEER, and more.

    Sunday, September 21

    On September 21, 2008, from 4-8pm…The Shops at Seaboard Station, a Gregory & Parker, Inc. Development, will host Down by the Tracks, VII, a fundraiser to benefit the SPCA of Wake County.

    This popular event has become a significant tool for raising money and awareness for the many homeless animals at the SPCA. Last year over 1000 people and 350 dogs attended DBTT VI and helped us raise over $15,000 for the SPCA.

    The outdoor block party is held at Seaboard Station in downtown Raleigh.

    This year’s event will feature live music by Peace Street Band!

    There will be a silent auction, free beer, food vendors, dance lessons, best dressed dog contest, caricaturist and much more. Kids and dogs (leashed) are welcome.

    In order to raise more money for the SPCA, there will be a general admission charge of $5.00, children 12 and under free.
